Osiris - The Lost Son

By Ali Sheikh Digital Design Final Year Project 2016/2017

Exploratory Gameplay Meets the Art of Storytelling

The aim of the project is to examine the effects of narrative and cultural influence to engage user emotive response. Constructing a 2D side scrolling game and game promotional artefacts to showcase the findings.

As a designer it’s easy creating something out of thin air, it’s finding the air that’s hard. My objective was to explore games as a storytelling medium. Using cultural sanctions to engage user experience. Implementing a cultural theme within the game enabled for users to feel comfortable in the environment and appreciate the narrative that much more. This project underwent an agile management system meaning the progress was made in short intervals. This allowed for much to be accomplished within a shorter time span.

In hindsight, future research will help in the development of the 2D game. The end goal is to put the game on a mobile platform. Building for a mobile platform is in response to the audience, everyone is not my consumer. However, the mobile application market is to grow 270%, with games accounting for 55%: The app market will grow to $189 billion by 2020.
